✦ Getting Here
The final stretch to LeConte Lookout follows steep, narrow mountain roads with sharp curves and some sections too tight for two vehicles to pass — please drive slowly and pull off when you see oncoming traffic. GPS can sometimes pass your driveway, so follow the driving directions in your guidebook rather than GPS alone for the last 1/4 mile.
We strongly recommend arriving before dark — the roads are unlit and much harder to navigate at night, especially on your first visit.
Vehicle guidance: A standard sedan can usually make the drive in dry conditions, but higher-clearance vehicles are more comfortable on the steeper sections. If you're renting a car, an SUV or AWD vehicle is a good choice.
Snow & Rain Plan: In wet weather, the roads can get slick, and in snow or ice, sections may not be passable without 4WD/AWD and proper tires — chains or tow-outs have been needed in past storms. If snow or ice is forecast during your stay, check conditions before heading up, allow extra travel time, and reach out to us for a real-time road update. During active winter weather, 4WD/AWD is strongly advised; if you're in a 2WD vehicle, consider delaying arrival until conditions improve.
